Tremella extract is a skincare ingredient similar to hyaluronic acid that is rich in polysaccharides, which are known to promote hydration and help the skin to retain moisture. It can also hold up to 500 times its own weight in water and unlike standard hyaluronic acid, which is often synthesized from animal tissue or wheat fermentation, tremella extract is derived from the snow mushroom (also known as the silver ear mushroom) which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries.
In addition to being a potentially more natural and potentially more gentle hydration booster, tremella extract may help to increase the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that are essential for maintaining the structure and elasticity of the skin, which can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Tremella extract works to fight off environmental damage by stimulating production of super oxide dismutase (SOD), which is the body’s natural antioxidant defense against free radicals. In comparison to both standard and plant based hyaluronic acids, tremella extract can provide a more flexible hydration film on the skin and also feel less “sticky” in its efforts to attract moisture to the skin.
